United’s structure held vs Villa: xG 1.31–1.02, 57% possession, sustained territory.
The match swung on individual lapses, not systemic breakdowns.
After Bruno went off, Martínez-in-midfield improved build-up control and progression.
Final-third execution failed: 0/3 big chances converted, 2 “must-score” misses.
The concern is depth + Bruno’s hamstring heading into January.
Hey everyone,
Apologies for the radio silence over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been travelling through Portugal and Japan, recharging the batteries. But as we all know, you never really disconnect from this club. I found myself checking scores at 3:00 AM in Tokyo hoping to see a turning point.
I’m back now and while a 2–1 loss to Aston Villa usually signals a crisis… today feels different.
Walking away from this result, the frustration isn’t about the system, it’s about the moments. We went to Villa Park short-handed (injuries + AFCON) and still controlled long stretches against one of the most in-form sides in the league (Villa have now won 7 straight).
Let’s get into the autopsy.

The Licha Experiment: What is his best position for the Newcastle game?
The Match in Numbers
We won the data battle, but lost the war. While we controlled territory and tempo, our inability to finish (shot conversion: Villa 2/12 = 16.7% vs United 1/15 = 6.7%) was the statistical decider.
Metric | Aston Villa | Man United | The Quick Read |
xG (Expected Goals) | 1.02 | 1.31 | We created the higher quality chances. |
Possession | 43% | 57% | Complete control of the game's rhythm. |
Final 3rd Entries | 27 | 50 | We lived in their half for the majority of the match. |
Big Chance Conversion | 33% (1/3) | 0% (0/3) | We failed to bury 2 "must-score" moments. |
Passes in Final 3rd | 37/59 (63%) | 101/130 (78%) | Our build-up was significantly more precise. |
Key Stats You Didn't See on TV
The Licha Experiment
The Stat: In 45 minutes as a CDM, Lisandro Martínez maintained a 90.6% pass accuracy and 100% long ball accuracy (2/2).
The Meaning: After Bruno’s halftime withdrawal, Martínez stepped into midfield (45’–90’) and United’s build-up immediately looked calmer. He offered a level of composure and security that Manuel Ugarte (81.3% PA) struggled to provide in the first half.
The "Yoro" Variance
The Stat: Leny Yoro recorded 3 clearances and 1 tackle, but was beaten for both Rogers goals.
The Meaning: The system worked the individual didn't. Yoro did not have a good game, being caught flat-footed or slow to react on both Rogers strikes. Against a top side, you cannot gift-wrap opportunities. If you remove those two lapses, United’s defensive structure looked improved.
The Finishing Crisis
The Stat: 15 shots, 34 touches in the opposition box, and 2 big chances missed.
The Meaning: Despite dominance, we remained "toothless" in the final third. Matheus Cunha (6 shots) and Benjamin Sesko missed vital opportunities, specifically a Cunha header that carried a massive xG value.
The Tactical Breaking Point
Where the game was lost.
The game was decided by lapses in individual concentration. Tielemans was allowed too much space to dig out a cross, and Yoro was "fast asleep" as Rogers nipped in to find the corner. It was a basic attacking movement that flustered a young backline missing the veteran presence of De Ligt or Maguire.
The Captain’s Hamstring (45')
The tactical dynamic shifted at halftime when Bruno Fernandes was withdrawn with a hamstring injury. As we analyzed in our previous Player Report: Bruno Fernandes, he is the heartbeat of this midfield. We lost our main source of chance creation in that moment. While Licha stabilized the middle, we struggled to find a clinical "Plan B" to replace Bruno’s directness, and Mason Mount’s set-pieces (0/3 accurate crosses) were unable to replicate the Captain's delivery.
Amorim tried to change the dynamic, but the bench was thin. Finishing the game with 18-year-olds Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey against a title-contending Villa side highlights our desperate need for depth. It wasn't a failure of management, but a failure of resources.

Player Ratings & Impact
Key performers based on the eye test and data.
Lisandro Martínez (8.0): Very impressive. His move to DM changed the game's gravity. He recorded 38 touches in just one half and proved he has the "football brain" to play in midfield.
Matheus Cunha (7.3): Scored a great curling equalizer. He takes the game on with 6 shots (3 on target), but his missed header was the difference between a point and a loss.
Ayden Heaven (7.2): A very impressive performance for the 19-year-old. He recorded a team-high 7 clearances and 2 blocked shots, holding his own against a physical Villa attack.
Manuel Ugarte (6.2): Busy but messy. 4 fouls, booked, and still lacks the ball security Amorim needs.
Final Thoughts
How We Lost We lost because of two individual errors from a young defender and a lack of clinical finishing. We didn't lose because we were outplayed. We went to Villa Park with a depleted squad, finishing the game with Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey on the pitch and went toe-to-toe with them.
What Comes Next Our "Process" showed signs of life. The real worry is the cost: Bruno Fernandes’ hamstring. If our captain is out for the long haul, this January is going to be incredibly difficult.
Prediction Check I didn't make a formal prediction due to travel, but let's be honest: Most of us expected a drubbing. To walk away disappointed with a 2-1 loss where we won the xG battle says everything about the direction we are heading.
